Weekly Activity to accomplish before - September 7, 2013
BEFORE REUNION ON SATURDAY NIGHT
EVERYONE READ: John 3:1-8
FOCUS VERSE: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." John 3:6
DISCUSS: Talk with the family about what it means to be born like a baby at the hospital as compared with the 2nd birth Jesus was discussing. How can we be "born again". Talk to kids about how Christians often talk about being born a second time by way of new life in Christ. Try to make this lofty concept simple for them. Jesus was offering eternal life by way of a 2nd birth. What does this mean. Parents explain to your children. (Stay tuned for Saturday Night if this is confusing.)
ACTIVITATE: There's a quote by Billy Graham where the evangelist asks, "Can you see God? You haven't seen him?... I've never seen the wind. I see the effects of the wind, but I've never seen the wind. There's a mystery to it." This week fly a kite, flag, or streamers in the air. Have the children look at or measure the effects of the wind. This could even be a science project of sorts on wind speed. Have children describe what the wind looks like.
This will afford the family time to talk about what being born again spiritually looks like. Can we see what happens when the Holy Spirit comes to reside in our lives? We may not be able to see it, but we can sense its affects and know of His presence. As we grow, believers begin to see the fruit of such a life. Encourage young ones in their desire to know Christ more by praying with them.
If they've never been confronted with the question, "Would they like to follow Jesus?" then ask and allow the Lord to grow His children.
